"Top dog" is the wrong frame, even for wolves

Mech's field synthesis shows wolf packs are typically family groups led by breeding parents, not hierarchies maintained through force. The "alpha" label, imported into dog training, badly oversimplifies wolf behaviour.

The concept of the alpha wolf as a "top dog" … is particularly misleading.
